* The big news out of practice was a new depth chart at quarterback, where true freshman Jordan Wynn moved up to No. 1, followed by JC transfer Terrance Cain and junior Corbin Louks.
* Said head coach Kyle Whittingham, "I want to emphasize that I am not naming a starter. Nothing is etched in stone. The order could change at any time, but Jordan will get 85-90 percent of the snaps for now."
* If Wynn does play as a true freshman, he will follow in some huge footsteps. His two immediate predecessors (Brian Johnson in 2004 and Alex Smith in 2002) both played as true freshmen and each finished his career with the school record for victories. Neither Johnson nor Smith started as a true freshman, however. Johnson played in 10 games and Smith in two in their first year of college. Johnson finished his career as the 2009 Sugar Bowl MVP and broke Smith's record for wins, going 26-7. Smith, a 2004 Heisman finalist and the MVP of the Fiesta Bowl, went 21-1 as a starter from 2003-04 for the best win percentage in school history.
* Just two true freshman quarterbacks have started in a game for Utah since the NCAA restored freshman eligibility in 1972: Ken Vierra started two games in 1981 and Scott Cate started in one game in 1982.
* Wynn and Cain got the lion's share of the reps in Friday's morning practice. Both had some impressive throws, with Wynn hitting DeVonte Christopher streaking down the sidelines for a 65-yard touchdown and Cain following with a beautiful spiral to Luke Matthews.
* In other camp news, there is a battle going on for the third and fourth corner spots. For now, Lamar Chapman and Justin Jones are behind starters R. J. Stanford and Brandon Burton, but Whittingham reports that receiver-turned-corner Ryan Lacy is "hot on their heels."
* At running back, Eddie Wide has taken the lead over freshman Sausan Shakerin for the backup job behind starter Matt Asiata.
* Walter Watts and Tevita Stevens are splitting time at right guard and doing so well that Zane Taylor looks safe to return to center, where he was honorable mention all-MWC a year ago. Taylor experimented at right guard in the spring when the position looked thin.
* After throwing an interception in Thursday's scrimmage, freshman quarterback Griff Robles laid an enormous hit on redshirt freshman linebacker Thor Salanoa. Today, the Utes learned that Salanoa suffered a broken scapula on the play and is out indefinitely.
* Replacing Salanoa and Zach Wade (scheduled for a knee scope on Monday) on the "105" roster are sophomore transfer defensive tackle Joape Pela and sophomore defensive back Nick Liefting.
* The players erupted in cheers after practice when coach Aaron Roderick dropped a kick from the ball machine. Roderick was perched on coach Blake Miller's shoulders at the time. He caught the first kick, and had he caught the second, the players would have had to run two laps. But the former all-conference receiver couldn't hang onto the second ball, so the coaches had to run instead.
