SALT LAKE CITY -
* Head coach Kyle Whittingham and offensive coordinator Dave Schramm weren't kidding when they said the QB race was far from over. Since naming freshman Jordan Wynn and Terrance Cain one and two, respectively, last Friday, an impressive competition has ignited. In this morning's practice, the two split reps nearly equally with the first team. "Terrance has been excellent since we narrowed the field to two (from three)," said Whittingham. "He has earned the right to split reps with Jordan. The better they play, the more snaps they will get," Whittingham said, adding that Wynn was also playing well.
* He dropped off the depth chart at QB this week, but junior Corbin Louks quickly reappeared ... on the other side of the ball. Louks, the backup quarterback for the past two seasons--playing in 19 games--began trying safety on for size two days ago. Whittingham stresses that no final decisions have been made, but if Louks stays at safety, he will likely redshirt. Safeties coach Morgan Scalley likes the idea of one of the team's fastest players (Louks has 4.42 40 speed) joining his group. "He is a natural," said Scalley after watching Louks sail through drills.
* If Louks vacates quarterback in search of more playing time, he'll be just a few months behind redshirt freshman DeVonte Christopher. Once a highly-touted quarterback recruit, Christopher took snaps for the scout team all last season before moving to receiver in the spring with the arrival of Wynn and Cain. Christopher is excelling at his new position and is solidly in the two deep at receiver.
* The Utes will hold their second scrimmage of camp on Tuesday. The scrimmage, which will be closed, will feature about 80 plays. Whittingham says that Wynn and Cain will split the snaps equally against a defense that will again sit most of its starters. Unlike the first scrimmage when nearly everyone other than 10-11 starters got on the field, playing time will not be spread around as liberally on Tuesday. "We are starting to solidify our depth chart and travel squad, so not as many guys will play in this scrimmage," explained Whittingham.
* Stars of the Day: For the defense, Whittingham said young tackles Latu Heimuli and Dave Kruger played well. Offensively, he reserved special praise for receivers DeVonte Christopher and David Reed, and running back Matt Asiata.
* The final piece has come together on the offensive line, where Walter Watts and Tevita Stevens will join starters Zane Beadles, Zane Taylor, Caleb Schlauderaff and Tony Bergstrom in the rotation. Watts and Stevens will split time at right guard.
