Day three of Utah football camp produced a lot of action on the offensive line. Zane Taylor, an honorable all-MWC center a year ago, handled most of the snapping for the first unit after playing right guard in the spring. Getting most of the time at right guard was Walter Watts, to the delight of his father (former Ute basketball star Walter Watts) and grandparents, who are in town from California. Tevita Stevens took turns at center and right guard. "We're going to continue to experiment until we find the fifth guy (for the offensive line)," said head coach Kyle Whittingham. Taylor, All-America candidate Zane Beadles, Tony Bergstrom and Caleb Schlauderaff are solid starters, leaving Stevens, Tyler Williams, Watts and Derek Tuimauga to duke it out for the fifth position.
Today's Stars
Defensively, Whittingham singled out Koa Misi, Stevenson Sylvester, Robert Johnson and Joe Dale for praise. Offensively, two receivers caught his eye. "David Reed had another good day and Jereme Brooks has really stepped it up and is showing strong leadership qualities." Whitttingham also liked what he saw from running back Matt Asiata and offensive tackle Zane Beadles.
Bad News, Good News
Reported Whittingham, "The offense turned the ball over too much today, but part of that is because we have a lot of playmakers on defense and they were putting a lot of pressure (on the quarterbacks)." He said there is no change in the three-man race at QB.
Doug Days of Summer
After two days of weight lifting and conditioning around the practice schedule, strength coach Doug Elisaia put the team through a series of "gassers" after Saturday's practice.
