Dear Tennis Friends,
Unfortunately Super Bowl Sunday was not a winning Sunday for our team. We played a tough UC Santa Barbara team, a team that has beaten us the past two years, and came up a touch short: 3-4. We started the day off losing the doubles point and we are now 0-4 in doubles. But after losing the doubles point our guys fought very hard and put themselves in a position to win. Unfortunately we couldn't close out some matches and take advantage of the opportunities presented to us.
But, overall we played better and we are improving. Phil snapped out of his losing streak at #1, beating a guy he had lost to last year. So the monkey is off his back and he finally has his first win of the season. At #2 singles, Jason Smits came up very big for us, winning in straight sets. Smitty has been an important force for us in the past few years down low in the line up, but he did a great job playing his first match at #2 singles. After serving a team suspension, Dima Mamedov was back on the team and after only one week of practice he battled at #3 singles but came up short. Dima is a freshman and simply needs to practice a little bit more to get his rhythm back, but he will help us this year. He will only get better from here on out. After a poor start, Alex Golding fought his way back into the match and won a hard fought 3-setter, which put us up 3-2 overall. Unfortunately Timmy Allin (#5 singles) and Stephen Jacobs (#6 singles) couldn't close out their matches. Timmy was up a set and a break, and Stephen was up a break in the third set.
Although we lost, we are starting to see some positive things happening to the team. Little by little we are starting to play better. On top of that we played with lots of passion and emotion and we fought very hard. Unfortunately, the loss snapped a two-year winning streak on our home courts, but we will try to start a new winning streak at home this weekend. UCSB was the last team to beat us at home two years ago and they did it again this year. Losing a 4-3 match is always tough. It's kind of like a buzzer beater in basketball or a last second field goal in football. Losing a close one hurts, but FD and I are proud of the way our guys carried themselves and the way they fought.
NEXT UP: Monday was a nice day off for our team. Hopefully they guys can get some rest and clear their minds after this tough loss. We will continue to improve and play two good regional teams in a double-header on Saturday, February 13, at the Eccles Tennis Center. At noon we will play Montana State, a team that we had a tough battle with last year and won 5-2, followed by a much improved Idaho State team at 5 pm.
Thanks for your continuing support and I hope you can join us for another exciting day of tennis at the Eccles Tennis Center this upcoming Saturday.
GO UTES,
