SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (4-3) will host No. 29-ranked Boise State (3-3) Friday and San Francisco (4-3) Saturday. Both matches will take place at the Eccles Tennis Center beginning at 5 p.m.
Last year the Utes upset the then No. 27-ranked Boise State in Idaho, 4-3, and gave head coach F.D. Robbins his 300th career win at Utah. Utah swept the doubles point and had wins from the Nos. 4, 5, and 6 singles positions.
The last time Utah faced San Francisco was Feb. 10, 2008 in California. The Dons defeated the Utes, 4-3.
The Broncos have fallen to three ranked opponents, No. 8-ranked Stanford University, No. 19-ranked Virginia and No. 25-ranked University of Washington. They have seen wins against the University of Oregon, 4-3, Utah State, 4-3, and Weber State, 7-0. James Meredith has a No. 36 national ranking for the Broncos playing at the No. 1 singles position.
The Dons have faced losses against No. 66-ranked UC Irvine, No. 39-ranked University of Hawaii and No. 30-ranked Fresno State. San Francisco has seen wins over Loyola Marymount, 6-1, Pacific, 4-2, Saint Mary's College, 4-3, and UC Davis, 4-3. They will face No. 49-ranked BYU Friday before taking on the No. 67-ranked Utes Saturday.
Utah is coming off of a victory over in-state rival Weber State. The Utes defeated the Wildcats, 5-2, after clinching the doubles point from the No. 1 position in a tie-breaker. Phillip Eilers and Alex Golding topped Simon Unger and Sasha Kiehne, 9-8(5). In singles the Utes had wins from the Nos. 1, 4, 5 and 6 slots. Stephen Jacobs clinched the match for the Utes from the No. 6 spot downing Ben Rode, 6-1, 6-3.
