Dear Tennis Friends,
It has been more than two weeks since my last email, and lots has happened for the tennis Utes. About 10 days ago we played Boise State. The Broncos came to town to get some revenge for last year's home loss and they took care of us easily, 6-1. Our freshman, Alex Golding, played a tough match and came up with our lone singles victory, while playing at #3 singles.
24 hours later it was Alex again who was in the lead role. This time the result didn't go his way and unfortunately for us, it meant our second straight home loss in as many days, as San Francisco edged us 4-3. The match was as close as the score appears and we had many chances to tip it our way, but for the second time this year we lost a home match 4-3. Both times we had our chances, both times we lost the doubles point and both times it came down to the very last singles match. Not very good for my heart, but more importantly it was a pretty big blow to our confidence.
Life didn't get much easier for us after that. We got a night's rest, a travel day and a practice day in Northern California, then took on national powerhouses Cal and Stanford. Ranked #10 and #9 respectively, both teams took care of us handily. But it was a good opportunity for our guys to play both of those teams and to get the experience of battling against top 10 teams. It is no disgrace losing to those types of teams, but it is important to learn and to improve from the experience we had.
NEXT UP: After having the weekend off, we are fresh and ready to take on a very good Nebraska squad on Sunday, March 14, at 11am at the Eccles Tennis Center. Nebraska comes to Salt Lake after beating the University of Arizona, 6-1, in Tucson, AZ last weekend. They are currently ranked #36 in the country. So it is another great opportunity for us to play another high-quality team. We just have to keep working and see every match as an opportunity to turn our season around.
