Dear Tennis Friends,
First of all, please accept my apologies for not emailing you any sooner. It has been quite a hectic time lately with lots of matches and, of course, signing date approaching rapidly. After three dual matches against formidable opponents and a recruiting trip I wish I could report back to you with better news. Nevertheless, we lost three heartbreakers and we now have lost 7 in a row.
On March 14 we played #23 Nebraska in a very hard fought match. Nebraska came to the Eccles Tennis Center on a hot streak, having beaten Arizona, Oregon and BYU all on the road with decisive numbers (all 6-1). But we competed well and got off to a great start winning the doubles point. Unfortunately, we couldn't capitalize on our lead and we ended up loosing 4-3. Overall, I thought we showed a lot of improvement and I thought we were about to turn the corner.
Six days later, we started off playing great doubles again and taking the lead against the #58 University of San Diego Toreros. But once again we couldn't hold on to our lead coming up short 5-2. We lost three 3-set matches, including both matches while being down 2-3 in the overall match.
Yesterday things didn't get much better. After winning the doubles point the last two matches, we gave away the doubles point against Cornell University. At #1 doubles we lost in a tie-breaker and at #3 doubles we were serving for the match and the doubles point, only to loose 9-7. That doubles point cost us dearly, since we lost our fourth 4-3 match of the season.
I am probably starting to sound like a broken record, but we are right there! In the beginning of the season we struggled to start matches and lost almost all of our doubles points. Right now, it looks like we have found some confidence and some rhythm in doubles. Unfortunately we came up a little short in our last match, but things are looking bright in doubles. We need to make sure we stay energetic out there and finish our matches.
In singles things are starting to look better and better as well. It looks like our seniors are settling in and ready to take charge: Phillip is finding his rhythm and is gaining some momentum at #1. Jason is playing his best tennis at #2 and he is competing better than he ever has. And Timmy is getting his confidence back and every match he plays he is getting tougher and tougher. He is always tough to beat lower in the line up. In the other 3 spots, our inexperienced guys are showing a lot of heart and they are working very hard. We now need to learn to win a few matches and get over the hump as a team.
NEXT UP: Friday March 26 we will play New Mexico State University in Salt Lake at 1pm. The match time has been rescheduled in order to play the match outdoors if weather permits. Above 50F we will play at Liberty Park, but below 50F or in case of precipitation we will play our match at the Eccles Tennis Center. Forecast for Friday is not great, so please contact our front desk (801-581 7075) to confirm match location. Playing NMSU is yet another opportunity to turn our season around against a ranked and very good opponent.
Hope to see you soon and GO UTES,
