Dear Tennis Friends,
It has been a while since my last email. The past two weeks were incredibly busy with two road trips: the first one to Albuquerque, NM and Colorado Springs, while the second one was to Dallas, TX. I wish I could write you today with better news, but unfortunately I am reporting to you that we went 1-3 on these two road trips.
UNM always has great teams with great competitors and fighters. They have gotten the best of us the last few years and we were unable to turn things around this year, although we went into the match rather confident about the match-ups. After leading most of the way, we couldn't close out some matches and ended up losing the doubles point. At #1 and #2 doubles we lost 9-8 and 9-7 respectively, and those losses set the tone for the rest of the match. Even though we had lost the doubles point, we still had chances in singles but we simply couldn't capitalize on them. Benito had two match points at #3 singles and Timmy and Stephen lost two close ones at #4 and 6 singles. So we ended up losing 5-2.
After a night's rest we caught a plane to Colorado and played the US Air Force Academy on Saturday morning. Due to the high wins and low temperatures we had to play on 4 courts indoors. It is always very tough adjusting to the high altitude in Colorado Springs, but our guys did a great job and came up with a 5-2 victory. Jason Smits played a very tough match with a pec muscle strain, which limited his service motion severely. He almost to come up with a win, but he did a terrific job out there fighting.
After a short week of practice we traveled down to play TCU in Fort Worth, TX. TCU has won the conference the past two years and always has very tough teams. The past two years we have been the only team in the conference to beat them, but we were unable to do so this year, losing 4-3. It would only be our 2nd complete match outdoors and we had to deal with 7500 feet of altitude difference in 5 days, but our team adjusted without any problems. After a bad start in doubles, we were leading the way in singles and definitely had our opportunities to turn the match our way, but as so often this season we failed to finish and close out sets and matches. Timmy Allin had a great win playing #4 singles beating his home town Horned Frogs.
The following day, on Friday, we played at UT Arlington. Going into the match we knew they were a tough team. Although not very well known, the Mavericks slip in the rankings frequently and they always compete for their conference championship. Although we played a much closer match than the night before, we still couldn't pull out a win, losing 5-2. After breezing through the doubles and winning the first set at #1-3 singles, again we were caught not closing out matches. It is a recurring theme this year: we are in every match, leading most of them, but we forget to finish it out. With only three matches in our regular season remaining, we are running out of time. But we will continue to work hard and try to solve this problem.
NEXT UP: Next up are two home matches against very formidable opponents. On Friday we will play #52 UNLV at 1pm. The past two years we pulled out two great victories during the regular season. Both times we ended up beating the Rebels 4-3, but they got the best of us during the Conference Championship Tournament last year. The following day, Saturday, we will play San Diego State at 10am. SDSU is always a very talented team and they have had a very rocky season this year, but they seem to have found their regular winning ways as of late and they will certainly push for yet another conference crown.
Both matches are scheduled to be played outdoors at Liberty Park, weather permitting. Please contact the front desk (801-581 7075) to find out on our match location in case of doubt.
Thanks and GO UTES,
