Offense Shines in First Football Scrimmage

Receivers Jereme Brooks and DeVonte Christopher starred for the offense in the first scrimmage of the spring, while converted offensive lineman Neli A'asa made some big plays from his new post at defensive tackle.
Brooks caught seven passes for 118 yards (long of 59) and two touchdowns--which included a score during red zone drills. Christopher and second-string QB Terrance Cain teamed up for some of the biggest plays of the day, including a 62-yard scoring pass on their first drive. Christopher finished with four catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns.
Playing with the first-string offense, Wynn completed 12-of-20 passes for 129 yards and three touchdowns. All three of his touchdown passes came during red zone drills and they included one for 11 yards to Brooks, 12 yards to Sausan Shakerin and nine yards to Kendrick Moeai.
Cain also looked sharp, completing 16-of-30 passes for 234 yards and three touchdowns (one during red zone play).
Several running back candidates saw action, including starter Eddie Wide (6 carries, 28 yards) and Shakerin (6 carries, 24 yards). Converted defensive back Victor Spikes rushed 8 times for 19 yards and a 3-yard touchdown.
The defense recorded two sacks, with half sacks by Joape Pela and A'asa and a 7-yard sack by Chaz Walker. Pela later left with an injury. A'asa broke up two passes and Dave Kruger forced a fumble.
The two-hour scrimmage under cloudy, cold conditions featured a total of 110 plays, including 85 "live" plays with the first and second units.
"There were a lot of positives," said Coach Kyle Whittingham. "Our offense took care of the football and protected the quarterback well. The quarterbacks threw the ball well. Defensively, we tackled well, but we did not get enough pressure on the quarterbacks."
