Dear Tennis Friends,
First of all I would like to take the time to congratulate Mat, Ruthann and the entire women's tennis team on winning the Mountain West Conference title outright with an 8-0 record. Mat and Ruthann have done a terrific job with the program over the past three years and have won their first conference crown together, but I am sure many more will follow! CONGRATS and enjoy the moment!
While I am congratulating people, I would like to take this moment to congratulate our senior co-captain Timmy Allin for winning the 2010 Dt. Burtis Evans Award for Academic Excellence. The honor is annually awarded to the male student-athlete with the best academic performance of the year. Go Timmy!
For our team, this past weekend didn't go as well as we had hoped. In perfect tennis weather, we started the weekend off in good fashion by upsetting UNLV on Friday, 4-3. The Rebels came into town ranked #58 and they played very tough. Although we almost lost yet another close one, our freshman Dmytro Mamedov stepped up and came through with a great victory at #6 singles, winning his match 7-5 in the third and clinching the team win. The victory was our second this year over a ranked opponent and gave us a 2-2 conference record.
On Saturday San Diego State came into town. SDSU has been playing their best tennis of late and although we played great doubles and took the doubles point, they showed us how good they really are in singles play. Freshman Alex Golding was our only singles player to earn a W and we lost the match 5-2. The loss puts us at 7-14 on the season and 2-3 in the conference tying us for 4th in the conference. A win next Saturday can send us to 3rd, while a loss will almost certainly have us finish 6th in the league.
NEXT UP: Next up are our arch rivals: the Team Down South! They have had their best season in a very long time and they currently have already sealed up at least a share of the conference title. A win for them would make them the outright and undefeated champs, while a loss would have them share the title with San Diego State. While we have beaten them the last two years, the contrasts between the two teams is very big. They currently hold 20-5 record and are 5-0 in the conference, while we are having a tough year. Where they have found ways to beat teams when things were close, we have done the opposite. But nevertheless, rivalries tend to be close and lots of things can happen. At least we can play without any pressure, while they come into town with a lot to lose.
Please join us this Saturday at noon, weather permitting, at Liberty Park tennis. Hopefully we can send those little cats home with only half a trophy!
