LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Phillip Eilers of the University of Utah men's tennis team was named 2009-10 Mountain West Conference co-Player of the Year while also earning All-MWC singles and doubles accolades, announced Wednesday at the MWC Tournament banquet in Las Vegas.
"I would like to congratulate Phil on being named Conference Player of the Year," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "He is very deserving of the award having played some great tennis at #1 singles and doubles. Also, I would like to congratulate Alex on his first All-Conference selection and we are looking forward to many more selections in singles and doubles from him in the future."
This is Eilers' second year in a row earning both singles and doubles honors and becomes the first Ute since Zach Ganger in 2007-08 to be named Player of the Year.
During his second year with Utah Eilers compiled a 5-1 MWC record and went 21-10 overall from the No. 1 singles position. In his senior season Eilers defeated Thomas Shubert of No. 33-ranked BYU, Emanuel Brighiu of No. 56 TCU, Mehdi Bouras of No. 58 UNLV, Nikola Bubnic of No. 58 San Diego and Chris Aumueller of No. 36 Nebraska. Eilers also made it to the singles finals at the Regional Championships.
Freshman Alex Golding also received a nod for his doubles accomplishments with partner Eilers. The Ute duo compiled a 2-4 MWC record and went 18-13 overall defeating Mehdi Bouras and Luca Barlocchi of UNLV in Utah's upset over the No. 58-ranked Rebels.
Eilers and Golding earned an automatic berth in the elite 16-team national championship event by capturing the doubles title at the Wilson/ITA Mountain Region Championships. As the No. 4 seed, they received a first-round bye, then won five matches to win the regional crown. En route to the title, they upset the No. 1-seeded duo of Andrew Landwerlen and David Simson of Denver in the semifinals, 8-6. They also topped two Mountain West Conference foes along the way, beating teams from New Mexico and UNLV.
