SALT LAKE CITY--Utah football coach Kyle Whittngham expressed satisfaction after watching his team close out its 2010 fall camp with a 70-play scrimmage in Rice-Eccles Stadium.
"Overall, camp was a positive and this (scrimmage) was a good conclusion," said Whittingham. "I think we're right on track. We're a little banged up, but we'll start getting some guys back next week, which will help with continuity."
After two scrimmages that featured a lot of hitting three deep, there was no tackling today when the `ones' were on the field, while the `threes' didn't see any action at all. Only the `twos' played full blown tackle football.
"We didn't have the `ones' go live today because they've gotten enough live work between the first two scrimmages and regular practices. It's getting too close to the game to take a chance on injuries," said Whititngham. "The `twos' had a bunch of live work today, however."
Standouts in the final scrimmage included No. 2 quarterback Terrance Cain, who was 14-of-18 passing for 227 yards and two touchdowns, and receiver DeVonte Christopher (four receptions for 81 yards).
Christopher is one of several who played well for a suddenly deep receiving corps, where recent junior college transfers Mo Lee and Dexter Ransom are new factors.
"There's a steep learning curve at receiver," acknowledged Whittingham, "But Mo Lee and Dexter Ransom are getting up to speed and I am confident they will be ready to contribute (this season)."
The scoring opened with a 48-yard field goal by Joe Phillips. All the other scoring happened during situational drills such as red zone, two-minute and `shadowing.'
Tauni Vakapuna led all rushers with 27 yards on nine carries. Complimenting Christopher's big receiving day was speedster Reggie Dunn with two grabs for 57 yards and a touchdown. All four tight ends caught passes, led by Kendrick Moeai (two catches for 44 yards). Brad Clifford caught a 38-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Wynn, who finished with 9-of-20 passing for 147 yards and a touchdown.
For the defense, Neli A'asa and Chad Manis both intercepted Wynn passes--Manis in the end zone. Trevor Reilly, Joe Kruger and Boo Andersen each had a sack.
