Opening statement:
A lot of positives came out of Saturday's game. We were very effective throwing the ball, we ran the ball well, and we played the run and the throw well. The special teams had a complete performance for the first time this year. A big negative was that we put the ball on the ground four times and lost three of those. We've got to do a better job with ball security and get that corrected.
San Jose State is another home game out of conference. They have a lot of the same personnel from last year. They got a win last week and played Wisconsin very tough. We need a good week of practice and have got to be ready to go. We are back in front of our home fans which is always a big positive. Congratulations to Lamar Chapman, who won the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Week award and Shaky Smithson who was the Special Teams Player of the Week. A great job by those guys.
Injury update:
Zane Taylor is progressing well. He is probable for this week. He has already been worked out today by the trainers and did a nice job. He will observe practice today and will go tomorrow barring anything unforeseen that may crop up.
We'll see about Jordan Wynn. He hasn't thrown since his injury. He will start to throw this week and we will see how he does and will make a decision based on that.
Brad Clifford injured his shoulder. He is going to be a few weeks, probably after the bye. J.J. Williams will not be playing. We have revamped the treatment for his foot and that is a 10-day to two-week process. Derrick Shelby will be back this week. His ankle did not allow him to make the trip last week but he will be back in the mix this week.
On Homecoming:
It's certainly good to see our former players that come back. It's usually a great crowd. It's something our players look forward to. For me the best thing about it is to see the former players come back and visit with them.
On Terrance Cain:
He was almost perfect on Saturday. He had over 200 yards with no interceptions, and a couple of touchdowns. He has played exceptionally well in two games. His pass efficiency rating is off the charts good. He had great protection from the offensive line, the receivers were running good routes, so he has a lot of support around him. Terrance was good in his decision making and went through his reads very well. He did a great job running the offense.
On ball security:
We emphasize ball security every day, not just in fall camp, but in the spring and every time we get on the field it is a point of emphasis. We have got to do a better job with it. We have had seven fumbles last year and lost six, which is a high ratio. We have got to get better. That's really an achilles heel of our football team. We address it every day.
On San Jose State's new head coach:
The schemes are different. Their offense is in the pistol now and they are doing things different there. They had a lot of personnel returning and their defensive scheme has been tweaked. They seem to be playing hard and with enthusiasm but it is what you expect when you change coaching staffs - a little different look.
