SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (1-0) defeated Weber State (0-2), by a score of 4-3, Friday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Freshman Matt Cowley clinched the winning point for the Utes in a three-set match at the No. 4 position by downing Ciao Poitena, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2.

"I am very happy to get our first win of the season under our belt," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Weber State played a very tough match today, but I am proud that our young team battled and came up with a win. When you line up five freshmen and one sophomore for the first match of the season, you don't always know what to expect, but our guys did a good job today. We are going to enjoy the weekend off and then improve our games to play two tough teams next week."

In doubles play, the freshmen duo of Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla downed Oliver Good and Poitena, 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.

At the No. 1 position, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Gino Octa earned the doubles point for the Utes by defeating Simon Unger and Peter Ramstromer-Pello, 8-6.

Cowley and fellow freshman Garrett LaBarre fell to Landon Barlow and Dave Hintze at the No. 2 spot, 8-6.

In singles play, Mamedov dropped the match at the No. 1 position to Unger, tying the score at 1-1.

At the No. 6 spot, Octa fell to Good, 7-5, 6-0.

LaBarre dropped a 6-2, 6-2 match to Barlow at the No. 3 position, putting the Wildcats up 3-1.

Medinilla topped Hintze at the No. 5 spot, 6-4, 6-0, making the score 2-3 in favor of Weber State.

At the No. 2 position Lane defeated Ramstromer-Pello, 6-3, 6-4, evening the score at 3-3, setting Cowley up to clinch the match.

The Utes return to action when they host Utah State Friday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m., at the Eccles Tennis Center.
