SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (1-1) fell to No. 75 Utah State (3-2), by a score of 4-3, Friday at Eccles Tennis Center.

"Today we lost to a solid and ranked Utah State team," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We will have to play better doubles in order to give ourselves a chance to win. Overall, I though Utah State's experience, having 4 seniors against 4 of our freshman, played a crucial role today. We are looking forward to playing Montana tomorrow."

In doubles play, freshman Gino Octa and junior Benito Suriano dropped an 8-3 decision at the No. 1 position to Bryan Marchant and Sven Poslusny.

The freshmen duo of Garrett LaBarre and Matt Cowley suffered an 8-4 defeat to Jakob Asplund and Nikita Ryashchenko from the No. 3 spot, giving Utah State the doubles point.

Fellow freshmen Devin Lane and Alejandro Medinilla downed Fredrik Peterson and Alex Thatcher 8-5, at the No. 2 position.

In singles play, Medinilla topped Ryashchenko, 6-1, 6-1, at the No. 6 position, evening the score at 1-1.

At the No. 4 position, Cowley fell to Marchant, 6-1, 7-5, putting the Aggies up 2-1.

Lane downed Peterson, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot, tying the score at 2-2.

Octa suffered a 6-4, 7-6(4) defeat to Thatcher at the No. 5 position, putting the Aggies ahead 3-2.

Suriano topped Poslusny from the No. 1 spot, 7-6(6), 7-6(2), evening out the score at 3-3.

Mamedov fell in a three-set match to Asplund at the No. 2 position, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2, making the final score 4-3 in favor of Utah State.

Utah returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 29) at 4 p.m. when they host Montana at the Eccles Tennis Center.
