SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-1) topped the Montana Grizzlies (1-1) Saturday at the Eccles Tennis Center by a score of 5-2. After dropping the doubles point, the Utes rallied to win five straight singles matches to capture the victory.

"I am proud of the guys for bouncing back after a tough loss yesterday and a shaky start in doubles today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "The guys fought very hard and came up with a good victory over a solid Montana team."

After trailing 1-0 going into singles play, freshman Devin Lane evened the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Mike Facey, from the No. 3 position. Next up, freshman Alejandro Medinilla topped Mikolaj Caruk, 6-3, 6-4, from the No. 4 spot, to give the Utes a 2-1 lead.

Freshman Gino Octa then defeated Ethan Vaughn from the No. 6 position, 6-1, 7-5, putting the Utes up 3-1, and setting up Dmytro Mamedov for the match clincher. He gave the Utes the win from the No. 2 position, downing Josh Smith, 6-2, 6-4, making the score 4-1.

With the match in hand, freshman Matt Cowley extended the Utes' lead with his win over David Cysneiros, 6-4, 6-3, from the No. 5 spot, putting the Utes up 5-1.

Junior Benito Suriano fell to Carl Kuschke from the No. 1 position in a tight three-set match, 7-6(4), 5-7, 10-8, giving the Grizzlies their second point.

In doubles play, Suriano and Cowley got the only Ute win by defeating Ben DeMarois and Facey from the No. 3 position, 8-4. The freshman duo of Medinilla and Lane fell to Smith and Caruk from the No. 2 position, 8-5. Mamedov and Octa then fell to Carl Kuschke and David Cysneiros by a score of 8-3 from the No. 1 spot, giving Montana the doubles point.

Next up, the Utes head to San Francisco, Calif., to take on USF on Feb. 6 at 1 p.m. PT.
