Utah Men's Tennis Suffers First Road Loss

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-2) dropped a 6-1 decision to University of San Francisco (1-1) Sunday at the Cal Club.

"We have been playing indoors since November," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Coming from high altitude and playing indoors, we fought hard but didn't play very well. We had our chances in the doubles and played some close matches in singles, but we played against a seasoned team that was better in these conditions."

In doubles play, Senior Benito Suriano and freshman Matt Cowley suffered a 9-8 loss to William Schumacher and Germain Bahri at the No. 1 spot. The freshmen duo of Alejandro Medinilla and Devin Lane fell to Richard Bucalem and Mark DeCastro at the No. 2 position, 8-6.

Junior Dmytro Mamedov and freshman Garrett LaBarre dropped a 9-8 decision Ola Bakke and Jacob Hartwig, giving the Dons the doubles point.

In singles play, Medinilla topped Zach Jiganti, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot, earning the Utes' only point.

Suriano fell to Bakke, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot, while Mamedov dropped a 6-4, 6-2, decision to DeCastro at the No. 2 position.

Lane fell to Schumacher, 7-6(5), 7-6(6) at the No. 3 spot, and freshman Gino Octa dropped a, 6-1, 6-0, decision to Bucalem at the No. 5 position.

Cowley fell to Hartwig, 7-6, 0-6, 6-1, from the No. 6 position, making the final score 6-1 in favor of San Francisco.

The Utes return to action in Palo Alto, Calif., when they take on Stanford on Tuesday, Feb. 8.
