SALT LAKE CITY - Despite rallying from several deficits, the Utah women's basketball team fell in a hard-fought game against TCU, 56-46, on Saturday evening in the Huntsman Center.
Iwalani Rodrigues led Utah with 16 points, while Michelle Harrison and Janita Badon each had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Utah (10-10, 3-3 MWC) came out gangbusters, scoring five quick points in the first minute. TCU equalized it within the next minute to start off the physical battle.
With the score tied at 15-15 with 10 minutes left, Utah quickly went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-15 lead with eight minutes remaining. Badon, Rodrigues and Michelle Plouffe all had baskets for Utah. Unfortunately, it was the last basket of the half for the Utes. TCU ended the half on an 11-0 run that ended with Helena Sverrisdottir's buzzer-beater layup for a 28-21 halftime lead.
TCU (14-6, 6-0 MWC) would go up 30-21 in the second half before Utah found its rhythm, reeling off a 10-1 run to tie the game 31-31 with 12:30 left in the half.
Several times in the second half TCU attempted to pull away but Utah was consistently able to answer the Horned Frogs' baskets.
With six minutes remaining and the score tied at 41-41, Emily Carter's free throws started a 10-0 run for TCU to put the game out of reach. Utah's shots failed to fall late in the game and TCU took advantage of foul shots and free throws.
The score was tied eight times during the game with five lead changes.
The Utes stayed in the game by out-rebounding TCU, 41-31. However, turnovers plagued Utah, giving the ball away 25 times, compared to nine turnovers for TCU.
Starr Crawford had a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds for TCU.
Before the game the team held its inaugural Power of Pink Awareness Walk in support of cancer research.
Utah has a bye this coming week, with their next game coming on Saturday, Jan. 29, at Colorado State.
