SALT LAKE CITY -
Utah junior cornerback Brandon Burton, a 2010 second-team all-Mountain West Conference selection, announced today that he will forego his final season of NCAA eligibility to enter the NFL Draft.
"My experience at Utah has been great, but after talking to various people and sitting down with my family, I decided that now is the time to pursue a career in the NFL. I feel I am ready maturity-wise to make the move," said Burton. "I received nothing but love and support from my coaches and teammates at Utah and I'll always be a Ute."
Burton says he plans to continue working towards his degree in economics from the U. "I'll take online classes initially, and in the offseason, I'll come back to Utah, enroll in classes and finish up," he said.
A two-year starter, who has played in 37 games in his career, Burton led the Utes in pass breakups in each of the past two seasons, batting down 10 passes as a sophomore and eight this year. His 18 career pass breakups is tied for the ninth-best mark at Utah.
In his final season at the U., Burton tallied 51 tackles, a tackle for loss, eight pass breakups and two interceptions. He finished sixth in the MWC in passes defended with 10. He also blocked two field goal attempts in the final two games of the season, including one on the last play of Utah's 17-16 win over Brigham Young.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said, "Brandon played a big part in our defensive success the past two years. After evaluating his options, he and his family have decided it's in his best interest to forego his senior season and enter the NF draft. We appreciate all that Brandon did for our program during his time at Utah and we wish him well in all his future endeavors."
