SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-1) heads to San Francisco, Calif., for their first road match of the season on Sunday, Feb. 6. The Utes will take on the University of San Francisco (0-1) at 1 p.m. PT at the Cal Club.
Last Time vs. USF: The Utes fell to the Dons, 4-3 in San Francisco. After dropping the doubles point, the decision came down to the third sets from the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. Jason Smits downed Rainer Nachbauer, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2, from the No. 2 position, tying the match at 3-3, but Alex Golding dropped the clincher to Einar Hart, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
Last Week: The Utes hosted in-state rival Utah State, falling to the No. 75 Aggies 4-3. Utah dropped the doubles point, but rallied with singles wins from freshmen Alejandro Medinilla, Devin Lane, and junior Benito Suriano. With the match tied at 3-3, sophomore Dmytro Mamedov fell in a tight three-set match to Jakob Asplund at the No. 2 position, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2, making the finals score 4-3 in favor of Utah State.
The Utes came back with a victory the following day as they topped the Montana Grizzlies, 5-2. After trailing 1-0 going into singles play, Lane defeated Mike Facey from the No. 3 spot, 6-1, 6-3, which was follow by a victory from Medinilla, that gave Utah a 2-1 lead. Freshman Gino Octa defeated Ethan Vaughn from the No. 6 position, 6-1, 7-5, putting the Utes up 3-1, and setting up Mamedov for the match winner. His win from the No. 2 spot over Josh Smith, 6-2, 6-4, clinched the match as the Utes went up 4-1. With the match in hand, freshman Matt Cowley extended the Utes' lead with his win over David Cysneiros, 6-4, 6-3, from the No. 5 position, putting the Utes up 5-1.
