SALT LAKE CITY - The Utah women's basketball team heads south this weekend to take on BYU in Provo on Saturday, Dec. 10, at 3:00 p.m. MT in the Marriott Center. Radio can be found at ESPN 700 with television at BYUtv.
Utah (4-3) is coming off its best defensive performance of the year after holding Idaho State to just 31 points and 22 percent shooting, and will look to continue that momentum against BYU. The 31 points is the least points a Pac-12 school has held their opponent to this year.
"BYU has a lot of talented offensive players, inside and out," Utah head coach Anthony Levrets said. "They can score from the perimeter and post, and we will have to have great team defense. In addition, their defensive press is always something that we have to think about. They are unlike any other team in that they press more than most teams do. We have to be able to attack that for 40 minutes. Those are the two key things for us.
"Even though we are not in the same league, it still feels to us like a rivalry. We respect their program a lot and we're excited that we're playing them."
BYU is 7-2 on the year and on a six-game winning streak. The Cougars play Southern Utah on Thursday before facing the Utes on Saturday.
Utah holds a 62-35 overall lead in the series, although BYU has had the upper hand recently, winning four of the last five games. Last season BYU swept the two regular-season games, but the Utes defeated the Cougars in the MWC Tournament, 50-49, as Michelle Plouffe's buzzer-beater shot lifted the Utes to the semifinal win. Utah would move on to win the MWC Tournament the next day with a win over TCU.
"BYU is a very talented team that plays very well together," Levrets said. "It's a huge challenge playing them this early in the season, but we are excited about the opportunity to play against such a good team."
The winner of Wednesday's game between BYU and Utah earns three points in the Deseret First Duel rivalry series between Utah and BYU. Utah leads the Duel, 10-6, after three events.
