In its final season as a member of the Mountain West Conference, the University of Utah placed 18 football players on the fall 2010 Academic all-MWC team. To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have completed at least one academic term at the member institution while maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better, and be a starter or significant contributor on their athletic team.
Utes who met the academic and athletic qualifications were: Brian Blechen, John Cullen, Dave Fagergren, Sean Fitzgerald, Patrick Greene, Joe Kruger, Nick Marsh, Matt Martinez, Luke Matthews, Dallin Rogers, Caleb Schlauderaff, Sean Sellwood, Derrick Shelby, Tevita Stevens, Zane Taylor, Westlee Tonga, Michael Walker and Tyler Whittingham.
The academic awards are the latest for the Utah football team, which was also recognized as one of the nation's highest-achieving academic teams in the annual Academic Bowl Championship Series Rankings by Higher Ed Watch. Utah placed fifth in the Higher Ed Watch academic rankings in 2010. The rankings are based on federal graduation rates and academic progress rates (APRs).
