SALT LAKE CITY- The University of Utah men's tennis team (2-2) is slated for a pair of matches against top ranked schools this week. Utah faces eighth-ranked Stanford (4-0) Tuesday, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif., followed by 18th-ranked California (2-2) Wednesday, at the Don and Ethel McLeod Tennis Complex in Berkeley, Calif. Both matches will be at 1:30 p.m. PT.
Last Time vs. Stanford: Utah fell to the ninth-ranked Cardinals by a score of 4-0. At the No. 4 position, Timmy Allin suffered a 6-4, 6-0 loss to Richard Wire, while fellow senior Jason Smits fell to No. 18 Alex Clayton at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, 6-4.
Stanford continued their lead when Dmytro Mamedov was defeated by Denis Lin at the No. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-0, and then clinched the match 4-0 after Alex Golding was topped by Greg Hirshman at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 6-3.
With the match already decided, the remaining matches between Phillip Eilers and Bradley Klahn at the No. 1 slot and Stephen Jacobs and Matt Kandath at the No. 6 position were discarded and doubles was not played.
Last Time vs California: Utah has not played California since the 2003-04 season, when they suffered a 6-0 loss to the Golden Bears.
Last Week: The Utes suffered a 6-1 loss to San Francisco (1-1) Sunday, at the Cal Club. After dropping the doubles point, freshman Alejandro Medinilla downed Zach Jiganti, 6-4, 6-3, at the No. 4 singles spot, earning the Utes' point.
Junior Benito Suriano fell to Ola Bakke, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 1 slot, while junior Mamedov dropped a 6-4, 6-2, decision to Mark DeCastro at the No. 2 position. Freshmen Devin Lane fell to William Schumacher, 7-6(5), 7-6(6), at the No. 3 spot and Gino Octa suffered a 6-1, 6-0 loss at the No. 5 slot to Richard Bucalem.
With the match in hand for San Francisco, freshman Matt Cowley dropped a 7-6, 0-6, 6-1 decision at the No. 6 position to Jacob Hartwig, making the final score 6-1 in favor of the Dons.
