SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-5) will be back in action Friday as it hosts Pacific (4-6) at the Eccles Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m.
The Utes are coming off a home win against Idaho State, where strong doubles play and a match-clinching singles win from sophomore Dmytro Mamedov led to the 6-1 victory over the Bengals. With that win, Utah improved to 6-1 this season at home and looks to add to their stellar home record Friday against the Tigers.
Youth Movement Freshman Alejandro Medinilla leads the Utes with an 8-3 dual match record, is 4-1 at the No. 4 singles spot, and boasts Utah's top winning percentage (.727). His most recent win was a 6-2, 6-4 victory over ISU's Dakota Pate at the third slot. Medinilla's strongest win was over Utah State's Nikita Ryashchenko, who he dominated 6-1, 6-1, from the No. 6 position.
He also contributed to Utah's shut out of Portland State, the first of the season. Medinilla swept Roman Margoulis 6-0 in his first set and nearly forced the match into a tie breaker, but managed a 7-6(6) victory at the No. 4 spot, lifting Utah 7-0 over the Vikings.
Fellow freshman Devin Lane adds to the young talent on the squad with a 6-5 dual match record and is 3-3 at the No. 3 position, while going 2-2 at the fourth slot. In his strongest win of the season, Lane dominated Montana State's Prithiv Sivasubraman at the No. 4 slot, 6-1, 6-1 . Returning to the fourth spot in his most recent victory, Lane snagged a straight 6-4, 6-4 win over Idaho State's top singles player, Nate Gross.
The doubles duo of Mamdeov and freshman Gino Octa hold a 4-1 record at the No. 3 spot, while going 5-2 in dual matches. In their most recent win, Mamedov and Octa battled at the No. 3 position for a tight 8-7(7-5) defeat over Idaho State's Nate Gross and Colton Pate.
The pair teamed up at the third slot once again to earn an 8-3 victory over Varun Gunaseelen and Angel Alvarez in Utah's 5-2 upset of No. 48-ranked Denver.
In addition to his notable doubles play, Octa holds a 4-2 singles record at the No. 6 spot and a 4-4 dual match record, a .500 winning percentage. He also currently hold the Utes' top winning streak with three, following his 6-3, 7-5 triumph over ISU's Dan Buckingham.
Last Time against Pacific In the last meeting with Pacific, the 56th-ranked Utes were upset on the road, 5-2, by the 69th-ranked Tigers in 2009. After being swept in doubles play, Utah was able to come up with two singles wins. At the No. 4 spot, John Taylor defeated Vergerd Veskimagi in a tight three-set match, 7-6(3), 3-6, 13-11. Timmy Allin also earned a 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 victory over Karl-Erik Paato at the fifth slot.
