SALT LAKE CITY - The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-6) hits the road for three road matches in San Diego, Calif., this week. The Utes will take on No. 74 Dartmouth Friday on a neutral court, then face No. 24 San Diego Saturday, and close out the road trip with a neutral court match against Loyola Marymount on Sunday. All matches are scheduled for 1:30 p.m PT.
Last Week
The Utes hosted Pacific at the Eccles Tennis Center Friday. After Utah earned the doubles point, Pacific took down four singles matches and went on to a 4-3 win. The Utes saw doubles wins from the freshmen duo of Matt Cowley and Devin Lane at the No. 2 spot (8-6) and from junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla at the top position (8-4). In singles play, Lane earned Utah's second point with a 6-3, 6-2 victory from the No. 4 spot, while Cowley put up the third point with a tight 6-4, 7-6(8) win at the fifth position.
Last Time vs Dartmouth
Utah defeated Dartmouth on a neutral court, also in San Diego, during the 2008 season by a score of 5-2. The Utes rallied in singles play after loosing the doubles point. Othman Zerouali-Ouariti decided the match win for the Utes with his victory at the No. 2 spot over Daniel Freeman, 7-5, 7-5.
Last Time vs San Diego
The Utes dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 58-ranked San Diego last year at the Eccles Tennis Center. After Utah swept the doubles point, the Toreros answered with singles victories from the Nos. 3,4,5, and 6 positions. Utah second point came from the top spot as Philip Eilers defeated Nikola Bubnic, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
Last Time vs Loyola Marymount
Utah dominated Loyola Marymount, 6-1, at home during the 2009 season. The Utes swept all three doubles matches and remained strong in singles, winning five of the six matches. Clinching the team victory was Wes Hancock, who beat Ivan Lopez at the No. 1 slot, 7-6(4), 6-2.
