The University of Utah men's tennis team (6-5) downed Idaho State (0-9) by a score of 6-1 Wednesday at the Eccles Tennis Center. Sophomore Dmytro Mamedov clinched the match for the second time this season for the Utes, from the No. 2 spot. Utah now holds a 6-1 home record.

"The guys did a really good job taking care of business today," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "It's yet another home win for our young team and we are looking forward to our next home match in 9 days."

Utah started strong in doubles play, sweeping Idaho State in all three spots. Freshmen Matt Cowley and Devin Lane earned an 8-3 victory at the second slot, topping Diego Cavalcanti and Dakota Pate. Junior Benito Suriano and freshman Alejandro Medinilla secured the doubles point at the No. 1 slot by downing Danel Barrenechea and Gilberto Azevedo, 8-4.

Freshman Gino Octa and Mamedov battled Nate Gross and Colton Pate at the No. 3 spot, coming out with an 8-7(5) victory after winning the tie breaker.

In singles play, Suriano earned his first shut-out of the season by blanking Barrenechea at the top spot, 6-0, 6-0. At the No. 2 position, Medinilla defeated Pate, 6-2, 6-4, setting up Mamedov to earn the match clinching point.

Mamedov downed Azevedo, 6-4, 6-3, putting the Utes up 4-0. Lane extended the Utes lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at the No. 4 spot over Gross.

Octa earned the Utes' sixth point, topping Dan Buckingham, 6-3, 7-5, at the No. 6 position.

After topping Cavalcanti, 6-3, in the first set, Cowley dropped the second set, 6-3 forcing a tie breaker. The Bengals saw their lone point when Cowley fell, 10-5, in the tie breaker, making the final score 6-1 in favor of Utah.

The Utes return to action when they host Pacific Friday, March 18, at the Eccles Tennis Center at 5 p.m.
