SALT LAKE CITY -
The defense dominated the second scrimmage of the spring, recording seven sacks, four interceptions and a fumble. Young backup quarterbacks Tyler Shreve and Griff Robles, who have handled every snap this spring while starter Jordan Wynn recovers from shoulder surgery, struggled with the unrelenting pressure.
Shreve, a true freshman playing with the first unit, completed 11 of 25 passes for 107 yards and an interception. His only touchdown came during red zone drills. Robles completed 6 of 13 passes and threw three picks. He also scored a touchdown in red zone play--his coming on a 6-yard run.
"I felt good overall about the defense," said coach Kyle Whittingham. "They put a lot of pressure on the quarterbacks, tackled well, made big plays and created five takeaways. Offensively, we were not productive in the throw game. The quarterbacks were under duress for most of the scrimmage. There were some positives in the run game and the red zone, but otherwise, we struggled offensively."
The biggest play of the day was courtesy of the defense. Safety Terrell Reese was tackled just shy of the end zone on an 83-yard interception return. Dave Fagergren, Boo Anderson and Michael Walker also made interceptions.
Defensive lineman Tevita Finau added to the offense's misery by breaking up two passes and returning a fumble (forced by David Rolf) 18 yards. The quarterbacks saw more than they wanted of the Kruger brothers as well. Dave and Joe Kruger had two of the seven sacks.
Certainly the day belonged to the defense, but Whittingham hinted that may change in Saturday's Red-White game. "We're going to water down the defense on Saturday, but we're going to do a lot on offense," he promised.
Utah will hold its final full practice of the spring on Wednesday, before concluding camp with an abbreviated practice on Friday and the Red-White game on Saturday.
