The offense executed and moved the ball well with Jordan Wynn back at the controls, and the defense had its share of success as well, in Utah's first scrimmage of fall camp, Thursday morning.
Wynn, competing under game-like conditions for the first time since last November, completed 9-of-17 passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. He was not intercepted.
Seventh-year Ute coach Kyle Whittingham was pleased with what he saw in the 90-play scrimmage. "While we have room for improvement, it was good for our first major scrimmage of the fall. The offense executed fairly well, had very few penalties and didn't have a lot of dropped balls. It was great to have Jordan (Wynn) back. He engineered two or three really nice drives. John White did a really nice job running the ball," added Whittingham about the junior college transfer who led all rushers with 12 carries for 47 yards.
Defensive highlights included touchdowns off interceptions by Nate Fakahafua and Trevor Reilly, and Mo Lee also picked off a pass. All three interceptions came at the expense of backup quarterback Jon Hays.
Later Whittingham singled out Lee, saying, "Mo is really progressing at corner. He did some really nice things today." Lee is a converted receiver who redshirted last season.
Whittingham wasn't as pleased with the second-string offense. "Our "2's" need a lot of work. They are way behind the "1's" and need to close the gap. We also need to work on our red zone offense, which made too many errors."
Utah's only touchdown during red zone drills came on an 8-yard run by Tauni Vakapuna, who finished with seven carries for 42 yards and had the longest rush of the day (31 yards).
DeVonte Christopher led the receivers, hauling in four balls for 102 yards. Lei Talamaivao had two sacks for the defense.
