The University of Utah athletics department will expand its tailgate options for home football games this season to accommodate increased fan interest in pre-game participation. The Pit has added 27 spaces, while U Tailgate Alley will make its debut on Oct. 1 for Utah's inaugural Pac-12 home game vs. Washington.
Spaces in both the Pit and U Tailgate Alley are available for purchase on a season basis by calling (801) 587-9894.
The Pit, which first opened to tailgaters in 2009, is located on the grassy fields adjacent to the Spence Eccles Field House on Guardsman Way. The Pit's popularity necessitated its expansion.
The closure of Guardsman Way to vehicle traffic between 400 South and the entrance to the Guardsman Way Tailgate Lot will pave the way for U Tailgate Alley. U Tailgate Alley will be in operation for Utah's final five home games and will offer 12 RV tailgating spots and 38 tailgate tents.
"While we encourage tailgating across our campus, the great tailgate history of Guardsman Way necessitated us looking for new ways to expand in that area," said Zack Lassiter, Utah's associate athletics director for revenue generation. "We believe these two initiatives will allow for another 1,000 Utah fans to enjoy the Guardsman Way tailgate experience."
