Jordan Wynn directed a scoring drive against the No. 1 defense on the opening series and Utah's placekicking duo of Coleman Petersen and Nick Marsh combined to make 15-of-18 field goals in the final scrimmage of fall camp, Saturday in Rice-Eccles Stadium.
Both the offense and the kicking game showed marked improvement from Tuesday's scrimmage and Whittingham attributed part of the offensive improvement to continuity under center.
"Jordan (Wynn) just needed back-to-back-to-back practices," said Whittingham, referring to Wynn's full participation in both practices Friday and the scrimmage today. Wynn, who has been on a throwing schedule this camp that does not have him passing every day, also missed two days this week with the flu.
"I liked the consistency on offense and it was far more productive than in our previous scrimmages," said Whittingham.
Every healthy member on the depth chart played at least some snaps, although some starters had a light day. Notable absences included offensive tackle John Cullen (concussion) and receiver DeVonte Christopher (ankle). Cullen has no timetable for his return, while Christopher expects to be back on the field by mid week.
Whittingham was pleased not only with Wynn, who completed 8-of-12 passes for 128 yards and a touchdown pass to Kenneth Scott, but also backup QB Jon Hays. Hays completed his first 11 passes and finished 11-of-13 for 133 yards and two touchdowns. Neither quarterback was intercepted.
"Jon has made a big step forward," said Whittingham, who also praised the play of Utah's receivers. "Griff McNabb was probably the highlight player of the day with his punt return for a touchdown and his touchdown catch."
The two biggest gains of the day came from Reggie Dunn, who caught a 49-yard pass from Wynn on the first play of the scrimmage, and Thretton Palamo, who broke free for a 56-yard touchdown run on the first series by the No. 2 offense. Palamo led all rushers with six carries for 67 yards.
J.T. Strong led the defense with two sacks for minus 11 yards.
In attendance was the FOX Sports team of Gus Johnson, Charles Davis and Tim Brewster.
