SALT LAKE CITY - Utah senior offensive tackle Tony Bergstrom has been selected as one of 30 candidates for the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I FBS senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Bergstrom, a chemical engineering major who has started all 26 games at offensive tackle the past two seasons, was named to the preseason watch list for the 2011 Outland Trophy. Last year the second-team all-Mountain West Conference selection led Utah on the line last year with 584 plays over the 10 games that were graded. He did not allow a sack in the regular season.
The 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season.
Utah has had two past finalists for the award: All-America kicker/punter Louie Sakoda in 2008 and All-America offensive tackle Zane Beadles in 2009.
