The return of Jordan Wynn under center and a fluke bee sting were two storylines from the first day of fall camp for the Utes, who spent two hours running through no-contact drills in shorts and helmets.
On the sidelines, the largest media contingent ever to attend a preseason Utah practice was buzzing over a bee attack on linebacker Brian Blechen. A bee flew into his mouth and stung the back of his throat, sending Blechen to the hospital to have the stinger removed. The 2010 Freshman All-American will return to practice tomorrow.
On the field, Wynn "threw very well with lots of velocity," according to head coach Kyle Whittingham. One receiver he did not throw to was highly-touted JC transfer Anthony Denham, who sat out with a strained hamstring.
"It was a very good first day," said Whittingham. "It is obvious that the players worked very hard in the weight room and the film room over the summer."
On the defensive side, Whittingham singled out three newcomers who shined: safeties Keith McGill and Eric Rowe and defensive end Nate Fakahafua.
The Utes will practice in shorts and helmets again tomorrow, adding shoulder pads on Saturday and Monday and practicing in full pads starting Tuesday.
