Utah Men's Tennis Shuts Out Sacramento State

DENVER, Colo. - The University of Utah men's tennis team (8-4) netted a 7-0 sweep of Sacramento State (3-6, 1-0 Big Sky) Saturday in a neutral-site match at the Gates Tennis Center. Junior Dmytro Mamedov netted the match clinching point for the Utes at 4-0 from the No. 2 spot.

Freshman Slim Hamza improved to a stellar 11-1 singles dual-match record, while pairing up with sophomore Devin Lane in doubles for a 9-1 record. Additionally, sophomore Alejandro Medinilla remains undefeated at 5-0 in singles dual matches.

"Today was a good way to bounce back from yesterday's tough loss," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "We played even better tennis and it was great to win the doubles point again."

Utah quickly secured the doubles point in two sets, starting with senior Benito Suriano and Mamedov's 8-4 victory over Aliaksandr Malko and Javier Millan at the top position.

Medinilla and freshman Ace Matias then topped Sean Kolar and Tom Miller, 8-4, at the No. 2 spot, giving Utah the doubles point. Lane and Hamza then downed Marek Marksoo and Roy Brandys, 8-3, at the No. 3 slot.

In singles play, Medinilla made the score 2-0 in favor of the Utes after topping Jonathan Hultkrantz at the No. 6 position, 6-3, 6-3. Freshman Rafael Davidian then downed Brandys, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 4 slot, setting up Mamedov for the match deciding point.

Mamedov then topped Millan, 6-3, 6-2, at the second slot to clinch the shut out at 4-0. Matias then extended the Utes victory to 5-0 at the No. 5 position, defeating Marksoo 6-3 in the first set before Marksoo retired in the second set at 4-1.

Hamza then bested Kolar, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 3 slot. setting up Suriano to complete the sweep at the No. 1 spot. Suriano then earned a tight 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-8 victory over Malko making the final score 7-0 in favor of Utah.

The Utes head to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Air Force Monday at 1 p.m.
