Obviously, this is tough. First, I want to thank the University. I had a great time here, and I am fortunate to have the opportunity to play Division I football. I want to thank the coaching staff. They have shown a lot of support throughout my whole career here. I am walking away with no regrets. I can walk away with my head up. I went out and tried as best that I could, and I worked hard. In the end, it was not meant to be for whatever reason. My shoulders couldn't hold up. There is no rhyme or reason why, but like I said, I am fortunate and grateful for the opportunity. I was able to earn my degree in economics, and that is the main reason why I came here, is to get a degree. There were a lot of positive things. I have made a lot of lifelong friends and met a lot of great people and made a lot of connections. It's been a great experience. It's not ideal how it ended, but I have no regrets. I'm walking away with my head held high.
On making the decision:
I talked with [athletic trainer] Paul [Silvestri] and the training staff a lot. I talked to my dad and I talked with Coach Whittingham. Collectively, it was in my best interest as a person to be somewhat healthy for the rest of my life. It's one of those things where it was time to hang it up.
At the moment when it first happened, I wasn't thinking like that. After the game I talked with my dad, and it was one of those things where enough is enough. For whatever reason, my shoulders can't hold up. It's one of those things where later on in life I would like to be able to still use my left arm. It's time.
Football is a game that I love, and it's not an easy decision to make. At the same time, it's tough to keep putting my body through this. The decision was made with advice from a lot of people, and hopefully it's the right one.
On the high point of his career:
There were a lot of high points, going back to my true freshman year being the bowl MVP. I have that trophy sitting on my nightstand at home. My sophomore year was pretty positive - the Iowa State game comes to mind. Like I said, I'm not happy with the way it ended, but I have no regrets and had fun while it lasted.
On his emotions:
I'm still in shock about the whole thing. It's definitely a weird feeling. At practice yesterday I had a tough time being out there. I'm trying to do the best that I can to help these guys out, and I'll move on and see what life has to offer.
On how he wants to be remembered:
[The fans] can remember me however they want. It would be nice to be remembered for the high points. They can think how they want, but for me it was nothing but positive. I have no regrets. I don't look back and think `I wish I would have done this.' I have done everything I could. Hopefully they think of me in a positive manner.
On possibly having shoulder surgery:
It's still in the works what's going to happen. I met with the doctors today and we're still planning that out. I know the feeling, and it feels like I'll need surgery, so we'll see what happens there. The bottom line is that I'd like to be healthy and hopefully have this be my last surgery.
On Travis Wilson:
My advice for him is just to go play. He is a good athlete and a good player. He'll be fine, and I'll be there on the sideline to help him as much as I can. He was recruited here for a reason, so I think he'll be fine.
On Jon Hays:
He's improved a lot. He went through the spring and summer and got vastly better, I think. Mentally, he is handling the offense and making the right reads. I'll miss both of those guys. I think either of them can get the job done. Especially with Jon, he's experienced. He went through the grinder last year, but came out of it and he has that experience. He got even better in the offseason.
On the possibility of coaching at Utah:
I've talked to them a couple of times and will continue talking to them about it. I love the game of football, and I would love to stay around it. It's tough to imagine life without it. I've been around it since I was six years old. I would like to stay around. We'll see what happens here, or if an opportunity arises elsewhere. It's definitely something that I want to do.
On the hit:
I took some hits early on, but I didn't feel anything. Maybe those hits loosened my shoulder up. It wasn't a huge hit. I guess I got hit in the right spot for it to come out. Just unfortunate.
On playing BYU and advice on the game to Hays and Wilson:
The main thing is just to try to stay poised. Jon was there last year when we went down there. It will be nice that we're in Rice-Eccles. My advice to them is just to handle the emotion of the game and remain poised. Both of those guys will do fine. They have a lot of help around them. I'll be on the sideline helping get those guys ready.
[Last year] was huge for everyone in the program. We lost to them down there my true freshman year, and it was good to get a win down there and a win of that magnitude was icing on the cake. I was coming off another shoulder surgery and kind of battling, and that was one of the games that I had the most fun in my career.
