WALLNUT CREEK, Calif. - University of Utah sophomore Slim Hamza has been named the Pac-12 Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Hamza, currently ranked No. 52 in the nation, becomes the first Utah men's tennis player ever to earn a weekly Pac-12 award.
"I am very excited about this award," said Hamza. "I am really proud to be representing the University of Utah, my team and our program. I am excited about it and feel honored."
"We are very proud of Slim," said head coach F.D. Robbins. "Slim has done a great job last year and is doing a great job again this year. It is a great accomplishment."
Hamza, a sophomore from Tunisia, Africa, was undefeated in Utah's season-opening double header last weekend, helping the Utes to 6-1 victories over Weber State and Idaho State. He routed Weber State's Oliver Good at the No. 2 singles position, 6-4, 6-2, and then teamed up with junior Devin Lane in doubles to top Todd Fought and Sanjay Goswami, 8-2.
Against Idaho State, Hamza posted another 6-4, 6-2 victory at the No. 2 singles slot, topping Krzysztof Stempien. In doubles play, Hamza and Lane netted an 8-3 win over Nate Gross and Charles Norman.
Hamza and the Utes will now face Montana at the Eccles Tennis Center Saturday at 5 p.m.
