Representing Utah at the 2013 Pac-12 Media Day at the Sony Studios in Los Angeles on Friday, July 26 will be Head Coach Kyle Whittingham, senior defensive end Trevor Reilly and junior tight end Jake Murphy. Dennis Erickson, who compiled a 179-96-1 record in 23 seasons as a head college coach and won two national championships at Miami, is Utah's new co-offensive coordinator (with Brian Johnson) and running backs coach. Erickson previously coached at three Pac-12 schools--Washington State, Oregon State and Arizona State--winning conference Coach of the Year honors at all of them. Second-year Ute assistant Ilaisa Tuiaki, who coached the tight ends and fullbacks in 2012, now has the defensive line. Ninth-year special teams coordinator Jay Hill is coaching the tight ends as well after managing the running backs last year. The team's operations have moved into a new $32 million, 149,000-square foot football center (square footage includes the 19,000-square foot Alex Smith Strength & Conditioning Center).TWO MINUTE DRILL
Utah returns just 13 starters from a year ago (6 offense, 6 defense, 1 punter). The biggest holes to fill are at corner, where no starters and virtually no Division I experience returns, and special teams, where Utah must replace its starting kicker and All-America kick returner Reggie Dunn ... Junior tight end Jake Murphy (6-4, 252, Jr.) led Utah in touchdown receptions (4) last season while finishing second on the team in total receptions (33) and third in receiving yards (349). Honorable mention All-Pac-12 in 2012, he is on the John Mackey Watch List for the nation's best tight end. A communication major from Alpine, Utah, he is married to the former Arianne Ingersoll. His father Dale played outfield for the Atlanta Braves from 1976-93, and was a six-time National League All-Star.SPOTLIGHT ON Trevor Reilly
Senior Trevor Reilly (6-5, 255, Sr.) was Utah's leading tackler last year with 69 total stops and an honorable mention All-Pac-12 linebacker. While projected to play mostly at defensive end this fall, after splitting his time between DE and linebacker his first three seasons, he is on the Butkus Award Watch List, which is awarded to the nation's best linebacker. The onetime walk-on has played in 36 games in his career with 20 starts. His seven career forced fumbles is tied for third in school history and he ranked in the top 10 in the Pac-12 in forced fumbles in both 2011 and 2012. He has 21 career tackles for loss (11.5 sacks) and was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week in 2011 after recording three TFL, two sacks, three forced fumbles, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery in Utah's win over BYU. Kyle Whittingham, the 2008 National Coach of the Year, has won nearly 70-percent of his games in eight years as Utah's head coach. His 71-32 overall record includes seven bowl victories and his teams have played in a bowl game every year but one since he took the helm in December of 2004. Utah has registered three 10-win seasons under Whittingham, including a 13-0 mark in 2008 that culminated with a 31-17 win over Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and a No. 2 national ranking. Whittingham is 2-0 in BCS bowl games, having served as the co-head coach of Utah's victorious 2005 Fiesta Bowl team, and his overall bowl record is 7-1. The 2013 season will mark Whittingham's 20th anniversary on the Utah coaching staff. In 19 years at the school, he has participated in 156 wins and 13 bowl games (winning 11). After one season as the defensive line coach in 1994, he spent the next decade as the Utes' defensive coordinator (1995-2004). He was elevated to head coach following an undefeated season in 2004, when Utah earned a No. 4 final national ranking. From 1999-2009, Utah won nine consecutive bowl games to tie for the second-longest bowl win streak in NCAA history. Whittingham was the defensive coordinator for the first three games of the streak, the co-head coach for the 2005 Fiesta Bowl win (2004 season) and the head coach for the five bowl victories from 2005-09. The Utes also won a bowl game under Whittingham in 2011--the first postseason win by the Pac-12 Conference in its inaugural year as a 12-member league.REVIEWING 2012
Utah failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time in a decade in 2012, finishing with a 5-7 overall record (3-6 Pac-12). Senior defensive tackle Star Lotulelei and senior kick returner Reggie Dunn were both named first-team All-American and first-team All-Pac-12 Conference. Lotulelei was selected with the 14th overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft by Carolina. Utah lost starting quarterback Jordan Wynn early in the season and handed the reins over to true freshman Travis Wilson in game six. For the third-straight year, there was a 98-percent renewal rate for Utah football season tickets. Returning season ticket holders also made 1,200 requests for upgrades or additional seats, and 100 season tickets were sold to fans on the wait list. With more than 32,000 seats claimed in renewals, season tickets will not go on sale to the general public. However, the ticket office is currently offering a three-game package for the Weber State, Arizona State and Colorado games at $99. If there are any single-game tickets remaining, they will go on sale on Aug. 5. Every game in Rice-Eccles Stadium for the last three seasons has sold out and the average attendance for each the past five seasons has exceeded the 45,017 seating capacity.
