Provo, Utah - Utah junior Cameron Lee and sophomore Matt Cowley advanced to the quarterfinals of the Utah Fall Tennis Classic at BYU.
The fourth-seeded Lee dropped his first set 4-6 to Jacob Curtis. But last year's ITA Junior College All-American, fought his way back into the match with a 6-1 win in the second set, followed by an 11-9 win in the super tiebreaker. In the second round, Lee handily took care of BYU's Jacob Sullivan 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Lee will face fellow Ute Matt Cowley, who just returned from his two-year mission. In the first round, Cowley beat Brocton Andurs, 6-1, 6-1, before topping Jeremy Bourgeois (BYU) in the second round: 7-5, 6-4.
Redshirt sophomore Justin Archer was able to win his first-round match, beating Orin Duffin 6-0, 6-3, but lost to Matt Pearce in the second round. Louis-Philippe Gascon had his chances to beat Brendon Kempin, up a break 6-4, 4-3, but the Canadian was unable to capitalize on his lead, losing 6-4, 4-6, 4-10. Both Archer and Gascon will continue to compete in the consolation bracket.
In doubles action, the duo of Cowley and Gascon were successful in their first outing together, beating Kevin Albaugh and Orin Duffin 8-2. They will face BYU's Jacob Sullivan and Matt Pearce in quarterfinals action.
The duo of Cameron Lee and Archer received a bye in the first round after being slotted second and will play Juan Canales and Andrey Goryachkov (BYU).
