Willems Advances to Semifinals at ITA Mountain Regionals

LAS VEGAS - Utah men's tennis' senior Cedric Willems captured his fourth consecutive win Friday at the Darling Tennis Center to advance to the ITA Mountain Regional singles semifinals.
"Cedric has done a terrific job so far at Regionals," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "He has played some of his best tennis in a Ute uniform and as a result, has upset some very good players. I hope he can continue his positive flow and play another good match in the semifinals."
Fifteenth-seeded Willems battled Nevada Reno's 10th-seeded Moez Chargui in the quarterfinals and dropped the first set 3-6. But Willems rallied in second set, taking it by the same margin, 6-3. He then topped Chargui in the third set 6-2 to clinch the victory. Willems is slated to take on first-seeded Henry Craig of Denver Saturday at 10 a.m. PT in the semifinals.
Although the Utes are out of main-draw doubles competition, junior Matt Cowley and freshman Santiago Sierra reached the doubles consolation quarterfinals with two wins Friday in the second and third rounds. The duo will face Weber State's Sanjay Goswami and Stefan Cooper Saturday at 10 a.m. PT.
