AUGUSTA, Ga. - Utah junior punter Tom Hackett, who leads the nation in punts inside the 10-yard line and ranks second nationally in punt average (47.2), was announced today as one of 10 semifinalists for the Ray Guy Award, which is presented to the nation's top punter.
In addition to his national rankings, Hackett leads the Pac-12 in punt average (47.2), punts inside the 20 (23), punts of 50+ yards (19) and total punt yards (2,594). Among his nation-leading 14 punts inside the 10-yard line are four inside the 5-yard line.
Hackett has been named the Ray Guy Award Player of the Week twice this year: vs. Fresno State and UCLA. He set a school record for punt average in a game against Fresno (55.4 yards on five punts).
Hackett, a first-team all-Pac-12 punter as a sophomore last season, grew up playing Australian rules football and had never played a down of American football before walking on to the Utah team in 2013.
Hackett becomes Utah's third semifinalist for one of this season's major national awards. Kicker Andy Phillips is a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award (nation's top place kicker) while Nate Orchard is a semifinalist for the Rotary Lombardi Award (College Lineman of the Year) and the Chuck Bednarik Award (Outstanding Defensive Player of the Year).
Three finalists for the Ray Guy award will be announced on Nov. 24 and the winner will be announced live on ESPN at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Dec. 11.
