FALL CAMP WEEK 1
The Utah football team kicks off its 10th preseason camp under the direction of head coach Kyle Whittingham on Monday, Aug. 4 with the first of 25 practices prior to the start of classes. The players won't wear pads until the sixth practice, per the NCAA-mandated "acclimatization" period. Camp concludes on Saturday, Aug. 23.SINGLE-GAME TICKETS ON SALE AUG. 4
Single-game tickets for all six of Utah's home games will go on sale to the public on Monday, Aug. 4 at Utahtickets.com, 801-581-UTIX, the Rice-Eccles Stadium ticket office and all 39 Smith's Tix locations (with no additional fees). Fans may also buy, sell and transfer tickets securely through Flash Seats at utes.flashseats.com. The week of the game, more seats may become available if visiting schools return tickets. The fall camp roster is capped at 105 players. The roster typically expands to around 118 players once school starts ... Returners not included in the initial 105 due to injuries are Geoffrey Norwood, Moana Ofahengaue and Daniel Nielson ... Among the new walk-ons expected to report on Monday is 21-year-old freshman tight end Wallace Gonzalez, who has spent the past three years as an outfielder in the Houston Astros' farm system. Gonzalez was drafted in the 29th round of the 2011 MLB draft out of Bishop Amat High School (Calif.) ... Sophomore Brian Allen switched from wide receiver to safety in the offseason ... There will be seven scholarship quarterbacks in camp, including six who are eligible to play this season--three of whom have previous NCAA game experience. Junior Travis Wilson enters camp as the starter, with Oklahoma transfer Kendal Thompson listed as No. 2 on the pre-camp depth chart.TWO MINUTE DRILL
Kyle Whittingham, who is 76-39 in nine seasons as Utah's head coach, has participated in 161 total Utah victories in 20 years as a head and assistant coach--the most by a coach in school history. In fall camp after missing all of last season with injuries are receiver Kenneth Scott, safety Brian Blechen and tight end Westlee Tonga ... Pac-12 Networks talent Mike Yam and Rick Neuheisel will visit Salt Lake City as part of their Pac-12 campus tour on Monday, Aug. 11 to record the Utah portion of Football Training Camp. The show, which will feature interviews with Utah players and coaches, analysis and more, will air that night at 10:00 MT on the Pac-12 Networks.NFL UTES
As the Utes prepare to start fall camp, 31 former Utes are participating in NFL training camps. Utes can be found on 20 NFL rosters this week, led by Oakland with four. The position with the most NFL Utes is the defensive line with eight. See sidebar on page 4 for the complete list of current NFL Utes.STAFF CHANGES
Dave Christensen, the former Wyoming head coach and 2011 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year, begins his first season as Utah's offensive coordinator and will also coach the tight ends. Other newcomers to the coaching staff are Jim Harding (offensive line) and Taylor Stubblefield (wide receivers). After nine seasons with the receivers, Aaron Roderick will coach the quarterbacks this fall, while head coach Kyle Whittingham takes over the special teams.COOLER FAN FEST
Utah's annual Fan Fest, featuring all 18 varsity athletic teams, is moving out of the heat of the day. The 2014 Fan Fest will run from 6-9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 23 on the Rice-Eccles Stadium south plaza. Parking and admission to the event is free. Ute teams and coaches will sign autographs, pose for photos and engage in interactive games with the fans.RETURN OF STRIPE THE STADIUM
After a highly-successful debut a year ago, "Stripe the Stadium" returns to Rice-Eccles Stadium for Utah's season-opening game against Idaho State on Aug. 28 at 5:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear red or white attire, depending on where their seats are located in the stadium. Alaska Airlines and the University of Utah athletics department have announced a partnership that will provide Ute football fans rewards ranging from priority boarding to discounted tickets during the 2014 season. Anyone wearing a Ute jersey or shirt on an Alaska Airlines flight originating in Salt Lake City International airport to any destination from Aug. 23-Dec. 1, 2014 will receive priority boarding. Alaska will also offer discounted fares to fans attending Ute road games, as well as to out-of-state fans returning to Salt Lake City for home games.
