Keep checking UtahUtes.com all season for a behind-the-scenes look at some of the University of Utah football team's preparations.
? The Utes were in helmets with shorts and shoulder pads on Wednesday for the second practice of their bye week before the Michigan game (Sept. 20 at 1:30 p.m. MT). The workout was held at the Eccles Center Practice Field. Ball carriers and receivers were downed after being touched.
? Utah concentrated on its offensive execution during a 7-on-7 segment before closing its workout with full-team live work.
Practice Highlights ...
? The media viewing period (final 20 minutes) started with 7-on-7 drives for both the first and second units on the north end of the practice field.
? Junior quarterback Travis Wilson found senior wide receiver Dres Anderson on a `go' route down the sideline for a nice gain. Wilson also connected with senior tight end Westlee Tonga on a square out on the right hash mark and junior running back Bubba Poole on a crossing route.
? Practice moved to live work from the offense's own 40-yard line with the first and second units alternating drives when Wilson found Poole on a wheel route for a nice gain up the left sideline.
? The travel squad was then released and the developmental team stayed and took reps in 7-on-7 drills with three quarterbacks throwing at once on air and the secondary worked on coming out of their breaks while the offensive and defensive linemen walked through their assignments. Starting receivers Kenneth Scott and Delshawn McClellon stuck around and caught passes from a machine on the sideline.
From Coach Whittingham ...
? Utah Head Coach Kyle Whittingham confirmed that cornerback Monte Seabrook was experimenting some at running back. ? "He played a lot of offense in high school so we just wanted to take a look at him there." ? When asked about senior defensive end Nate Orchard, Whittingham said he has been a fantastic leader for his team. He lauded Orchard's ability to lead by example. ? To prepare for the environment in Michigan Stadium, Whittingham said the team will blare music and crowd noise from speakers, in an attempt to simulate noise at a road game. ?
Post-Practice Impressions from the Ute Players ...
Senior defensive end Nate Orchard
"I enjoy being a leader of this team. It's a great opportunity and I hope I'm setting a great example for the other guys."
Sophomore defensive back/wide receiver Dominique Hatfield
"My technique is becoming better and I feel more comfortable on both sides of the ball."
Senior defensive back Eric Rowe
"Being a college football fan growing up, I used to watch Michigan all of the time so that will be special. But other than that, it will just be another game, a business trip."
#PrepareU Extras ...
? Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" (and every other cover version) once again blared through the speakers at the practice field. Cash's original version was on repeat during much of the scout team's workout. Whittingham revealed after practice that the playing of the song during scout team work has become a bye-week tradition that he believed was started by a member of the strength and conditioning staff about 15 years ago.
? Former Ute and NFL safety Robert Johnson visited today's practice.
