Keep checking UtahUtes.com all season for a behind-the-scenes look at some of the University of Utah football team's preparations. The Utes hit the practice field to prepare for Saturday's Pac-12 opener against Washington State.
Practice Summary ...
? Utah was in shorts and shoulder pads on Wednesday for its second practice of Washington State week (Saturday at 6 p.m. MT / Pac-12 Networks). The no-contact workout was held at the Eccles Center Practice Facility.
? The Utes began preparing for the Homecoming game by focusing on each phase they will need to face the Cougars.
Practice Highlights ...
? Media viewing (final 20 minutes) began with the first and second lines going through 1-on-1 match ups for the linemen in the red zone on the north end.
? Full-team special teams work took center stage at midfield, while the skill positions concentrated on technique in individual work.
? Full-time live work from the red zone then concluded practice.
From Coach Whittingham ...
? Heading into conference play, Coach Whittingham emphasized that his team just needs to keep doing what it's doing to be successful, which includes working your tail off Monday through Friday and then making exciting plays and executing on Saturday.
? Whittingham said the cornerbacks are getting better and that Dominique Hatfield is a natural cornerback and Eric Rowe is making a transition to cornerback. Tevin Carter and Brian Blechen have been great at safeties, but Justin Thomas has been the 'unsung hero' of the Utah defensive backfield.
? He reiterated that the Utes don't have to necessarily sack Washington State's quarterback Connor Halliday, but want to put pressure on him to keep him out of rhythm.
? Hunter Dimick was praised for his consistency on the defensive line from game to game.
? Dres Anderson has been impressive this season and Whittingham was proud of his improvement, even from last season.
Post-Practice Impressions from the Ute Players ...
Dres Anderson
? We have a lot more players on the offense compared to last season so he is looking forward to facing more 1-on-1 coverage.
? He is happy that Kenneth Scott is healthy to free him up to make more plays and be able to run down field freely.
? Travis [Wilson] is amazing. He's been a leader in everything he does.
Kaelin Clay
? Said his most memorable football moment was his punt return for touchdown at Michigan.
? He said he did not plan to strike the 'Heisman' pose after his punt return for touchdown, but did not want to draw attention to himself. It was meant to pay hommage to Desmond Howard.
#PrepareU Extras ...
? The Utes played catch, took photos, signed autographs and visited with a local youth football team after practice.
