OUTFIELD
Just like the infield for the Utes this season, Utah brings back an abundance of experience to the outfield from last season's squad that went 31-24 overall. Head coach Amy Hogue can rely on a pair of returning starters to this year's squad, in addition to three very reliable returners and an incoming freshman.
The only problem that Utah may have with the outfield, will come down the road, as with a good problem to have - five of the six outfielders are seniors and will have to be replaced following the 2015 season.
Utah welcomes back Kate Dickman (Mission Viego, Calif.), who not only brings back her senior leadership skills, but the four-year veteran can be relied on as one of the team's best hitters in the lineup. Dickman led the Utes, ranked third in the Pac-12 and ranked 47th in the nation with a .415 batting average, while registering a team-leading 80 hits that went for 16 doubles, five triples and three home runs. She set a new school record scoring 59 runs last season and she drove in 41 runs, as well. She led all players with a .596 slugging percentage and was second on the team with a .453 on-base percentage.
"Kate and [infielder] Hannah [Flippen] both have great leadership qualities," said Hogue. "Both players were voted as team captains and the two of them make a fun combo. The two of them have already taken charge of this team and I look for their leadership roles to be a very good thing going into the season."
Marissa Mendenhall (Stansbury Park, Utah) returns after starting 45 of Utah's 55 games last season, where she hit .278 with six doubles and tied for the team-high with seven home runs. Mendenhall scored 16 runs and tallied 31 runs batted in on the season, while recording a .481 slugging and .351 on-base percentages. She is also a two-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection.
Kendal Bergman (Wheat Ridge, Colo.), is Utah's third four-year veteran on the squad that returns to the team after hitting .333 in 17 games that she played in last season. Bergman tallied five hits with a double and drove in four runs in 15 at-bats. She drew five walks and was hit by a pitch, while recording a .524 on-base percentage for the Utes in 2014.
Local product, Shelbi Everett (Cottonwood Heights, Utah), can man the outfield for the Utes, as well as play the catcher position. Everett started four games and saw action in 40 games for the Utes last season. She notched four hits with a double, drove in three runs and scored 14 runs as well. A threat on the base-paths, Everett was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts last season.
Another local product, Maddy Woodard (Murray, Utah), will look to see the field this season after sitting out the 2014 campaign. A 2014 transfer from Salt Lake Community College, Woodard cranked a team-leading 16 home runs for the Bruins and was named the SWAC Player of the Year in 2013. While at SLCC, Woodard was both a NJCAA and NFCA All-American selection.
Incoming freshman Heather Bowen (Las Vegas, Nev.) serves as the final piece of the roster that will man the outfield this season. Bowen, who will also serve as a utility player for the Utes, was Nevada's 2012 Gatorade Player of the Year and was a three-time all-state infielder following her four years at Centennial High School. She broke her school record for home runs and was a member of back-to-back state championship teams.
The Utes will open the 2015 campaign next Friday, Feb. 6 at the SoCal Collegiate Classic, with games being held at two different locations in the Los Angeles, Calif. Area. Utah will face No. 24/24 Texas A&M in the season-opener with a first pitch slated for 10:30 a.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium in Westwood.
