Tulsa, OK - The University of Utah men's tennis team will compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American Championships this weekend at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The top Div 1 men's tennis players in the nation with gather for the fall's biggest national tournament, with pre-qualifying slated for October 3 & 4, qualifying October 5 & 6, and the main draw October 7 - 12.
Four Utah players have been invited to participate in singles action: senior Matt Cowley, sophomore Freddie McGeehan and freshman Dan Little. Junior Parker McGuiness will begin the tournament in qualifying.
Sophomore Egbert Weverink was also invited but is currently injured. Little will stand in as Cowley's doubles partner on Monday. Weverink and Cowley had been ranked 59th in the nation.
McGeehan is set kick off the tournament for the Utes at 10.30 a.m. CT when he squares off against Julian Zlobinsky (University of Texas). Little, who cruised through his draw at last week's Utah Invitational, will face Sam Giammalva (Texas A&M), while Cowley will face off against Daniel Santos (Tulsa) at 3 p.m. CT.
All players will have to win four rounds over the next two days to earn a spot in the qualifying tournament, which is set to start on Monday. McGuiness will automatically start in the qualifying draw, based on last year's regional ranking.
Head coach Roeland Brateanu looks forward to the high level of competition: "This is a great opportunity for guys to measure themselves against at the national level against some of the top teams in the country."
Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists, and consolation champions get automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Nov. 12-15, held at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
