Salt Lake City, UT - Utah men's tennis added a pair of newcomers for the 2016-17 season. Head Coach Roeland Brateanu announced the additions of Jon Dollahite and RJ Parker to the Utes this evening.
With the commitment of Jon Dollahite and RJ Parker, the Utes have secured the top 2 players in the state of Utah and the USTA Intermountain Section.
"Local players are the bloodline for any program, so it goes without saying that we are incredibly excited to have signed the two top players in our region," Brateanu said. "Both Jon and RJ have huge upside, they are class acts and we are super excited to have them join our Ute family."
Dollahite, the three-time defending 4A Utah State Champion, is currently a senior at Mountain View High School in Orem. During his prep career, he has lost a total of three matches while being coached by former BYU standout James Ludlow.
"Jon is a fantastic player with huge potential and arguably one of the most dominant players in the state of Utah the last few years," Brateanu said. "On top of that, he is an incredibly intelligent and mature young man."
On the national stage, Dollahite has ranked as high as No. 32 in the nation and was rated a 5-star recruit by tennisrecruiting.net. He has dominated the USTA Intermountain section and is currently its top ranked player.
"I chose Utah because I absolutely loved the coach, the program, and the energy of the entire university," said Dollahite. "I see the incredible growth in the school and can't wait to be a part of it."
A 4.0 student and member of the National Honor Society, Dollahite is also a volunteer for the "Read Aloud" program at Cherry Hill Elementary School. His father David, who also played tennis growing up in northern California, is a Professor of Family Life at BYU and is a published author.
Parker, born in Orem, but raised in Bountiful, has lived the last year in Irvine, California to train at the Advantage Tennis Academy under coach Jimmy Johnson. Under Johnson's tutelage, Parker improved to a 4-star recruit and was the No. 1-ranked player in the state of Utah.
"RJ is a real diamond in the rough and has a bright future ahead of him," Brateanu added. "We are honored with his commitment and look forward to working with him."
"I'm so happy, excited and truly blessed to be getting this amazing opportunity," Parker stated. "Coach Johnson played a crucial role in both my tennis and personal development. I have my family to thank as well for their constant support throughout my journey."
Parker started playing tennis at the age of 9 and competed for Woods Cross High School during his freshman and sophomore years, before making the move to train in California. In January, he was the runner up at the Intermountain Regional Masters and he recently won the Intermountain Fall Championships with Dollahite.
Furthermore he competed at the Zonal Team Championships and represented the Intermountain section at the 2015 National Team Championships.
"I chose Utah because it feels like home and I knew that I would thrive there in both tennis and as a person. I also found an amazing connection with the coaching staff and know they are the right fit to take me to the next level," Parker added.
Both of Parker's parents, Todd and Allison, are graduates from BYU, and his father played football and baseball for the Cougars.
