SALT LAKE CITY--
Lewis Powell is returning to his alma mater as Utah's tight ends' coach, Kyle Whittingham announced today. Powell, the defensive line coach at Hawaii since 2012, was a Utah administrative assistant in 2011 and a graduate assistant from 2009-10.
In his three seasons at Hawaii, the Rainbow Warriors showed steady improvement on defense and ranked third in the nation in tackles for loss per game (8.3) in 2013. Hawaii improved 33 places nationally in total defense from 2013 to 2014.
Powell coached two second-team all-Mountain West Conference defensive linemen: Beau Yap in 2013 and Paipai Falemalu in 2012. He also earned a reputation as a talented recruiter while at UH.
As an administrative or graduate assistant at Utah, Powell assisted with three bowl teams: the 2009 Poinsettia Bowl, 2010 Las Vegas Bowl and 2011 Sun Bowl.
Born in Honolulu, Powell was raised in East Palo Alto, Calif. As a player at Utah, Powell was a three-year letterman on the defensive line and was named the 2003 Liberty Bowl Defensive Player of the Game in Utah's 17-0 victory over Southern Miss. The Utes finished the season with a 10-2 record and as Mountain West Conference champions.
Following his collegiate career, Powell played in the Arena Football League as an offensive and defensive lineman for the Memphis Xplorers (2005) and Utah Blaze (2006-08).
