Utah Men's Tennis Starts Slow, Rolls Late

The Utah men's tennis team started the first day of fall competition with a strong performance at the Bobcat Invite.
In Bozeman, Mont., sophomores Santiago Sierra and Louis-Philippe Gascon advanced to the semifinals, while No 1-seeded Matt Cowley and Egbert Weverink, ranked No. 59 in the nation, as well as the tandem of Jamey Swiggart and Johan Jonhagen, were upset in the quarterfinals. Sierra and Gascon will face Montana State's Flink and James in semifinal action Saturday at 10am.
However, the Utes rebounded and finished the day undefeated in singles play. In the top flight, No. 2 seed Matt Cowley beat Victor Casadevall (Montana) 6-0, 6-4, while Johan Jonhagen handily beat Bjorn Scheepbouwer (Idaho State) 6-1, 6-3.
In Flight B, second-seeded Santiago Sierra beat Montana State's Dylan Harvala in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, and Louis-Philippe Gascon defeated Connor Mengert (Idaho State), 6-1, 6-1.
"It was nice to see the guys bounce back and play tough in singles after a rocky start in doubles," said assistant coach Daniel Pollock. "We look forward to getting more match play tomorrow."
After the first day of competition in the ITF Futures Event in Costa Mesa, California, only sophomore Freddie McGeehan (GBR) is left standing after defeating Kaptan Kaster (USA), 6-0, 6-4. McGeehan will play Alexander Cozbinov (MDA) on Saturday.
Junior Parker McGuiness (USA) and freshman Dan Little (GBR) failed to continue into the second round and can start preparing for next week's Utah Invitational Tournament at the Eccles Tennis Center.
"It was a disappointing first day of competition for us in southern California today," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "We have to shake off some rust and find a way to get the engines started."
