SALT LAKE CITY - Hailey Skolmoski struck again for Utah Soccer (8-2-2, 3-0-1), scoring the winner on a 1-0 victory over Oregon State (5-6-2, 0-4-0) to open Homecoming Weekend. This is the best start for the program in a Pac-12 campaign since joining the conference in 2011.
Â
"It was great to be back at Ute Field," head coach
Rich Manning said after playing six of the last seven games on the road. "We played with a lot of positive energy in tonight's game and executed very well in the first half. Credit to Oregon State for coming out after the break and putting us under some pressure. I think we can learn from tonight's game. We are always pleased to get points in Pac-12 play and look forward to the next challenge."
The sophomore scored her ninth goal of the season in the 15
th minute when she pelted a ball from 22 yards out into the top of the net. They play developed quickly after Skolmoski received a throw-in from
Janie Kearl. For Kearl, a junior defender, it was her first point in her collegiate career.
Â
After Utah opened the scoring, Helene Haavik tried to find the equalizer but
July Mathias was able to deny her. The sophomore had a solid night in goal, earning her third shutout of the season and the seventh by the Utes. Mathias would then stop Allison Pantuso on the half hour to preserve a first-half lead for Utah.
Â
The home team had a number of chances to increase its lead in the first half.
Taylor Slattery and
Paola van der Veen had tries on goal saved by Bella Geist, while Skolmoski,
Cabria Turang and
Katie Rogers all had scoring opportunities.
Â
In the second half,
Tavia Leachman was able to get her head to a ball and force a save from Geist in the 51
st minute. Fellow freshman
Ireland Dunn was a nuisance up front for the Utes, creating three scoring chances in six minutes for the Utes.
Â
During the final 15 minutes, Geist kept the Beavers within a goal, stopping Turang,
Taylor Slattery and Leachman again off a header.
