Last Weekend
After a draw with Arizona State on Thursday,
Hailey Skolmoski scored a pair of goals as Utah Soccer erased an early deficit and stayed unbeaten in Pac-12 play with a 2-1 win at Arizona on Sunday.
Â
Skolmoski scored the equalizer on the half hour after missing a penalty kick and then added the winner in the 70th minute. This was also the first multi-goal game for a Ute in a Pac-12 game since
Megan Trabert scored a pair during a 4-3 double-overtime win at Washington State in 2013.
Â
Series History
Utah is 8-2-1 all-time against Oregon, including a perfect 5-0-0 mark in SLC. Last season, Utah earned the win in Eugene thanks to goals from
Paola van der Veen and
Natalie Vukic. The last contest here was in 2013 when
Katie Rogers scored the winner in a 1-0 contest. Utah has out-scored the Ducks 12-4 all-time at Ute Field
Â
Utah is 4-3-0 all-time against Oregon State and has won three in a row against the Beavers.
Mariah Elmer had the winner last season in Corvallis during a 1-0 victory and
Taylor Slattery scored the deciding goal the last time at Ute Field in 2013, also a 1-0 Ute triumph.Â
Skolmoski Starring as Sophomore
Hailey Skolmoski currently leads the Pac-12 with eight goals and is second with 18 points scored, the highest totals for a Utah player since 2009. She closed non-conference play by netting the game-winner vs. UC Irvine, giving her four this season. That's the highest total of match deciders for a Ute since 2007.
Skolmoski was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 30. The sophomore netted twice in the Ute wins over San Diego and then once more in a victory at Utah State
This was the first weekly honor for Skolmoski and she became Utah's first Offensive Player of the Week in program history. This was Utah's 10th Pac-12 weekly honor since joining the conference.
Skolmoski was the 2014 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year after scoring a school record 28 goals at Riverton HS and winning a pair of regional titles.Â
Facilitating Feet
Utah is currently third in the league in assists with
Katie Rogers and
Holly Daugirda leading the team with three apiece. Both players assisted on goals in Sunday's win at Arizona.
Â
Rogers, a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic selection, moved into a more defensive midfield role last season and started all but one contest for the Utes.
Â
Daugirda spent her summer in New Zealand where she suited up for the U.S. Under-19 Women's National Team. She was also named the 2015 Utah Gatorade Player of the Year
Â
Freshmen Leading From the Back
Three freshmen,
Aleea Gwerder,
Tavia Leachman and
Natalee Wells have helped this team's transformation by creating a solid defensive corps. Utah has only allowed eight goals in its 11 contests with six shutouts to its credit.
Â
Leachman, a center back, led powerhouse Long Beach Poly to three-consecutive Moore League titles and has played all but 30 minutes this season. Wells was ranked as the no. 5 recruit in the state of Utah by MaxPreps and has moved back from a midfield role at the start of the season to serve as Leachman's partner in the middle.
Â
Gwerder led Washington Premier to a U18 Rainier Challenge championship and is joined on the outside by
Janie Kearl a junior who started last season primarily in the midfield. A former First Team All-State selection, she helped lead East HS to a pair of regional championships.
Â
Goalkeeper
Carly Nelson, another freshman and native of Lindon, is stepping up in goal with three shutouts to her credit. She ranks third in save percentage (.857) and fourth in goals-against average (0.56) despite missing the last two games with an injury. A Deseret News two-time First Team All-State goalkeeper she helped Timpanogos reach the 4A state title game three years in a row.
