GUADALAJARA, Mexico – After a spectacular 2016, where he went 25-3, junior vice-captain Santiago Sierra has been invited to join the Mexican Davis Cup Team in 2017.
"Representing my country has always been my dream," said an emotional Sierra. "Besides representing Mexico, I'm representing the tennis community back home that helped me to where I am today, as well as my family, friends and the University of Utah. I'm excited about the opportunity and proud of my accomplishment."
Sierra will join captain David Roditi and the Mexican team to compete in America Zone Group II against Guatemala. A win will advance them into the second round in which they will face the winner of Barbados vs Paraguay. A loss will force them into a playoff to prevent relegation into Zone Group III.
"Whatever sport you play, representing your country at the highest level is everyone's dream and Santi has made that a reality," said head coach Roeland Brateanu. "If you dream big, set goals and work your butt off for them, great things can happen. Our entire team is so very proud of Santi!"
Sierra becomes the 11th Ute to represent his country in the Davis Cup and fourth to do so in the last decade. Current teammate David Micevski (Macedonia), former teammate Slim Hamza (Tunisia) and Benito Suriano (El Salvador) all competed in the Davis Cup for their respective countries. Jim Osborne (USA) remains the only Ute to have hoisted the famous Davis Cup trophy in 1968.
